Penn Foundation’s Camp Courage Celebrates 17th Season

(Sellersville, PA) – Penn Foundation’s Camp Courage began its 17th year on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. Penn Foundation’s Wrap Around program will provide Camp Courage, a special needs camp for children ages 7 through 12 with mental health or developmental disorders, at Camp Men O Lan in Quakertown, PA.

More than just a camp experience, Camp Courage utilizes a high staff-to-camper ratio (3:1) and therapeutic support in an outdoor setting to enhance personal development for kids with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Camp Courage is based on the Circle of Courage model. The camp seeks to enrich children’s lives by using socialization to emphasize experiences such as belonging, mastery, independence and generosity. Camp Courage allows campers to experience summer camp and set and reach their goals.

Camp Courage allows its campers to grow and flourish,” Penn Foundation Director of Wrap Around and the Autism Support Center, Debra Springer, comments. She explains that a child’s opportunity to engage in social activities such as Camp Courage can be one area that helps to support the child’s overall growth and learning. “It is extremely rewarding to see each child’s individual successes as they participate in our Camp Courage program.”

Campers are given opportunities to maximize their full potential. A therapeutic supervisor at Camp Courage is on hand to handle emotional issues or behavioral difficulties and provide clinical oversight to the program. This added support allows the campers to have a very positive and successful camp experience.

Held on the grounds of Camp Men-O-Lan near Quakertown, Camp Courage participants are able to access all activities offered through Men-O-Lan. Camp Men-O-Lan provides a range of activities including swimming, a ropes course, bible stories, singing, sports, hiking, boating, fishing, archery, a climbing wall, and a water slide.
