Penn Foundation Dedicates New Residential Community Penn Villa

On Monday, September 26, 2011, Penn Foundation dedicated Penn Villa, its new residential community providing safe, affordable housing for 23 adults with mental illness.

Completed in June 2011 and located at 599 Diamond Street in Sellersville, Penn Villa consists of one group home (housing up to 8 individuals) and five townhomes (housing up to 3 individuals per townhouse). These new facilities, which replace crowded two-bedroom apartments, afford residents more privacy and space and enable Penn Foundation to provide housing for more individuals. Penn Villa construction was accomplished using internationally-recognized green building standards with the use of green materials and resources and the installation of a geothermal cooling and heating system.

"Penn Villa is the realization of more than 15 years of research and planning, and we are delighted to celebrate with the residents as they settle into their new homes," says Wayne Mugrauer, President and CEO. "We are extremely grateful to our collaborative partners as well as to our community for partnering with us to make these facilities a reality."

"Not long ago, I walked the icy streets as a homeless man, eating in charity kitchens and spending my days in a bus station for warmth," says Joe, a Penn Villa resident. "Now, I live in a gorgeous new townhouse with every possible amenity in bucolic Sellersville. My standard of living is so high it is beyond belief. The words 'thank you' are not adequate."

Penn Foundation's Mental Health Residential Program offers two-levels of housing support for adults with mental illness. Within a caring community that promotes independence, personal growth, and holistic recovery, residents receive assistance with daily living skills such as meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, money management, personal hygiene habits, cleaning, and laundry. They then use these skills to make life changes and to enhance their connection to and participation in the broader community.
