ABC News Anchor Dan Harris Headlines Autumn Event

Penn Foundation’s caring community came together in September for our 13th annual Autumn Event featuring ABC News Anchor Dan Harris. This special evening raised more than $130,000 for Penn Foundation, which supports our ability to provide the clinical programs and care upon which our community depends. In addition, our silent auction raised more than $11,000 for Camp Courage 2016, a summer camp program for children with emotional and developmental disorders.

During the event, Harris spoke candidly about the effects reporting from war zones had on his mental health, culminating in an on-air panic attack in 2004. Harris discussed his recovery journey, which included mindfulness and meditation. “I think, in the not-too-distant future, we’re going to look at mental exercise the way we now look at physical exercise,” he said.

Harris’ talk resonated with the audience and echoed the work being done by Penn Foundation staff to provide those we serve with an integrated, holistic approach to care.

That evening, we also honored Thomas K. Leidy, retired President and CEO of Leidy’s, Inc. and Vice Chair of Penn Foundation’s Board of Directors, with our 12th annual Adventures in Excellence Award. This award recognizes Leidy’s outstanding personal and community leadership. His decades of board service are just one example of his deep commitment to our community.

We were pleased to present Karen Kern, MSW, LCSW, Penn Foundation Vice President, with the 2nd annual Vernon H. Kratz, MD Penn Foundation Service Award. Kern has spent the last 44 years working tirelessly to support those in need, mentor staff and students, and develop and oversee clinical services and supports that are steeped in Penn Foundation’s rich tradition of premier behavioral healthcare delivery.

For the third year, we welcomed ABC News Correspondent (former 6abc Action News Anchor) Eva Pilgrim as our emcee for the evening.

The Autumn Event was orchestrated by a dedicated group of volunteers, led by Chair Dale Wentz, who worked throughout the year to plan a dynamic and engaging evening that shed light on Penn Foundation's work. To view an album of pictures from Autumn Event, visit our Facebook page at
