Penn Foundation Receives Substance Abuse Prevention Grant

Penn Foundation received a grant from the Bucks County Drug and Alcohol Commission to promote substance abuse awareness and prevention in the local community. The grant is designed to support four groups: schools, physicians, clergy, and youth.

  • This spring, Penn Foundation partnered with the Souderton Area School District and the Indian Valley Character Counts Coalition, the Quakertown Community School District, and Quakertown Christian School to offer panel discussions about substance abuse awareness, prevention, intervention, and education.

  • In April, more than 30 community faith leaders gathered at Penn Foundation for a morning workshop entitled “Addiction 101.” Clinicians representing various Penn Foundation programs addressed the question, “What do you need to meet the spiritual needs of members of your congregation struggling with addiction?” This was the first in a two-part series that will help local faith communities identify substance abuse issues in their congregations, minister appropriately, and increase awareness of available resources.

  • Also in April, Penn Foundation Medical Director Chris Squillaro, DO, spoke to Grand View Hospital’s medical staff about “How to Manage Drug-Seeking Behavior.”

  • In June, Penn Foundation hosted the first meeting of the Substance Abuse Prevention Youth Advisory Committee. This committee works to engage youth in the process of planning prevention activities for their peer group. If you know any adolescents, ages 14-17, who may be interested in participating on this committee, please contact Deb Ryan, Director of Community Outreach, at 215.453.5165 or dryan@pennfoundation.org.

If you or someone you know would like to speak with a trained substance abuse professional, please call our Recovery Center at 215.257.9999 or e-mail us at rchelp@pennfoundation.org.
