SUMMARY:QPR:  An Evidence-Based Suicide Prevention Practice
DESCRIPTION:About the Course \nQPR stands for Question\, Persuade\, and Refer – the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.  QPR’s mission is to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative\, practical and proven suicide prevention training.  This quality educational training empowers all people\, regardless of their background\, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.  QPR is included in SAMHSA’s (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices. \nCourse Objectives \n\nParticipants will be able to discuss facts concerning suicide and suicide prevention\nParticipants will become familiar with warning signs of those who may be thinking about suicide\nParticipants will gain knowledge on how to ask the Question about suicide\, Persuade individuals to get help and Refer to the proper resources\nParticipants will be able to list three resources concerning suicide attemptors and surviving family and friends\n\nTarget Audience \nTarget audience includes social workers\, professional counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, recovery coaches\, peer specialists\, nurses\, nurse practitioners\, psychiatrists\, and substance abuse counselors for this intermediate level of instruction. \nCEs \n\n2.0 PCB Approved Education Credits\n2.0 Continuing Education Credits for Licensed Social Workers\, Licensed Professional Counselors\, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists\n2.0 Continuing Education Credits for Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)\n\n  \nThere is no conflict of interest or commercial support for this program \nAll attendees must arrive promptly at the beginning of the training and remain the duration of the training to receive continuing education credits.  Please have license number available when signing in.  There is a $50 fee for continuing education credits. \nPersons with disabilities and special needs are encouraged to contact the registrar for further information. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nGovan A. Martin\, III\, retired as a 29-year veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP).  In his tenure in the PSP\, Govan worked in patrol\, crime\, and the highlight of his career was becoming Manager of the Member Assistance Program (an internal Peer Support/Employee Assistance Program for the Pennsylvania State Police) in 2000.  Govan was instrumental and helped create/write legislation for Confidentiality for Law Enforcement Peer Support and Critical Incidents in 2010.  Govan started the Annual Law Enforcement Employee Assistance/Peer Support Program Conference in 2006 for State Police agencies across the country\, along with the FBI\, to build a cooperative network among Law Enforcement EAP agencies.  Govan has been a keynote speaker for Suicide Prevention/Awareness across Pennsylvania\, Employee Assistance/Peer Support Programs\, and CISM conferences across the country and internationally\, e.g. International Employee Assistance Program Association (EAPA)\, the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF)\, etc.  Currently\, Govan is the Chair of the Board of Directors for Prevent Suicide PA.  He is also doing private consulting for various organizations for suicide prevention and critical/traumatic incident training.  Govan served as Co-Chair of the PA Adult/Older Adult Suicide Prevention Coalition and was also a PA Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative Advisory Board Member since 2009.  Govan also serves on the Law Enforcement Suicide Advisory committee for the American Association of Suicidology. \nFor more information\, contact Karen M.
