SUMMARY:Using the S.E.L.F. Model to Understand Trauma\, Attachment and the Importance of Rebuilding Connections
DESCRIPTION:About the Course \nIt is becoming well known that a history of trauma\, abuse and prolonged exposure to persistently dangerous circumstances can have a profound impact on the later physical\, psychological\, emotional\, social and spiritual growth capacities of children and adults alike.  As a result of this exposure to trauma\, safe\, reliable\, and productive attachments with other human beings and even their own higher power can be troubled throughout their life cycle.  This course will identify the primary biopsychosocial and spiritual impacts that such exposure to trauma can have on a person’s ability to create safe and reliable attachments with others and will offer some strategies for social and emotional repair that communities can offer those so injured. \nCourse Objectives \nAt the end of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify four significant domains of a person’s life that are significantly altered by exposure to trauma and its impact\, and the applicability of the S.E.L.F. Model to marginalized communities with limited access to behavioral health resources\nSummarize the reasons why exposure to trauma at different stages of a person’s life cycle can impact the ways that such exposure is then evidenced behaviorally and interpersonally later in life\nAssess and critique the strengths and limitations of current diagnostic formulations when applied with individuals with severe attachment disorders\nCompare the strengths and limitations of current treatment modalities when used with individuals with severe attachment disorders and complex histories of trauma\n\nTarget Audience \nTarget audience includes social workers\, professional counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, recovery coaches\, peer specialists\, nurses\, nurse practitioners\, psychiatrists\, and substance abuse counselors for this intermediate level of instruction. \nCEs \n\n2.0 Continuing Education Credits for Licensed Social Workers\, Licensed Professional Counselors\, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists\n2.0 Continuing Education Credits for Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)\n\n  \nThere is no conflict of interest or commercial support for this program. \nAll attendees must arrive promptly at the beginning of the training and remain the duration of the training to receive continuing education credits.  Please have license number available when signing in. \nPersons with disabilities and special needs are encouraged to contact the registrar for further information. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nJoseph F. Foderaro\, LCSW\, BCD\, is a licensed clinical social worker and has Diplomat Status with the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work.  One of the co-founders of the Sanctuary Model of Trauma-Informed Care and co-author of the S.E.L.F. SUMMARY:The Resilient Clinician
DESCRIPTION:About the Course \nOne of the greatest gifts persons in the healing and helping professions can share with their colleagues and patients is a sense of their own inner strength.  However\, they cannot share what they do not have.  By discussing approaches to acute and chronic secondary stress (the pressures experienced in reaching out to others)\, Dr. Wicks\, the author of The Resilient Clinician\, Overcoming Secondary Stress in Medical and Nursing Practice\, and Perspective:  The Calm within the Storm\, offers insights into how professional caregivers can reach out without being pulled down.  Topics will include:  developing a self-care protocol; maintaining a healthy sense of perspective when faced with the dangers of secondary stress; appreciating the elements within a circle of supportive and challenging friends that professional caregivers need to maintain a balance today; “riding the dragon”:  approaches to fearless self-awareness as a clinician; recognizing and addressing traumatic counter-transference; elements of professional detachment and the necessity of at least a sense of informal “mindfulness” amidst the practice and stresses endemic to contemporary professional caregiving. \nCourse Objectives \n\nDescribe secondary stress\nList 4 different types of friends necessary to remain resilient as well as sensitive to diverse populations\nDesign a self-care protocol\nRecite at least 3 major dangers to caregiver resiliency\nDefine “mindfulness”\n\nTarget Audience \nTarget audience includes psychologists\, social workers\, professional counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, recovery coaches\, peer specialists\, nurses\, nurse practitioners\, psychiatrists\, and substance abuse counselors for this intermediate level of instruction. \nCEs \n\n3.0 PCB Approved Education Credits\n3.0 Continuing Education Credits for License Social Workers\, Licensed Professional Counselors\, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists\n3.0 Continuing Education Credits for Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)\n\n  \nThere is no conflict of interest or commercial support for this program. \nAll attendees must arrive promptly at the beginning of the training and remain the duration of the training to receive continuing education credits.  Please have license number available when signing in. \nPersons with disabilities and special needs are encouraged to contact the registrar for further information. \n  \nRobert J. SUMMARY:Complicated Grief and Loss
DESCRIPTION:  \nComplicated Grief and Loss                                               \nSaturday\, October 27\, 2018 | 9:00 – 12:00 noon \nAbout the Course \nGrief has many faces. Each culture or group establishes what is normal and what is not normal in responding to losses. As clinicians and/or pastoral care givers\, how do we know if what we are seeing is healthy or unhealthy grief or a cultural variation? What can we do to support healthy grieving so that we do no harm and instead offer help? How can we respond clinically and/or pastorally to complicated grief? In this training for clinicians\, clergy\, and lay persons\, we will explore what triggers and exacerbates complicated grief and what aids and supports recovery. Using the dual process model (which posits healthy grief as an oscillation between loss-orientation and restoration-orientation) and narrative theory’s emphasis on re-storying one’s life and relationships\, attendees will gain confidence in helping persons experiencing complicated grief to re-engage with life. \nCourse Objectives \n\nParticipants will understand how to identify normal grief and differentiate it from complicated grief\nParticipants will be able to list risk factors and triggers that can lead to complicated grief\nParticipants will assess spiritual assets and potential limitations that may aid or exacerbate complicated grief\nParticipants will be able to describe 3 techniques that regulate intense grief emotions in times of loss-orientation\nParticipants will describe how re-storying throughout the grief process can assist the bereaved in re-engaging with life\n\nTarget Audience \nTarget audience includes psychologists\, social workers\, professional counselors\, marriage and family therapists\, recovery coaches\, peer specialists\, nurses\, nurse practitioners\, psychiatrists\, and substance abuse counselors for this intermediate level of instruction. \nCEs \n\n3.0 PCB Approved Education Credits\n3.0 Continuing Education Credits for Licensed Social workers\, Licensed Professional Counselors\, and Licensed Marriage and Family therapists\n3.0 Continuing Education Credits for Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)\n\nThere is no conflict of interest or commercial support for this program. \n  \nAll attendees must arrive promptly at the beginning of the training and remain the duration of the training to receive continuing education credits. SUMMARY:Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children
DESCRIPTION:About the Course \nUsing the 5 Steps to Protecting Our Children™ as a framework\, Stewards of Children® is a two-hour training that teaches adults practical actions to prevent child sexual abuse or intervene if abuse is suspected. Featuring compelling and engaging content to motivate participants\, the program is designed for parents\, concerned individuals\, and any adult that works with youth. Children® features survivors who lived through child sexual abuse\, experienced its immediate and long-term effects\, and ultimately were able to find healing. It also highlights experts who work with children and families and confront abuse on a daily basis. Research suggests that child sexual abuse reports\, substantiations\, and interventions in cases of abuse increase as a result of training\, implying that more children are being identified as victims and able to receive services.
