About the Course

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer – the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.  This training helps individuals to understand and recognize a mental health crisis.  By learning QPR, you will come to recognize the warning signs, clues and suicidal communications of people in trouble and gain the skills to act vigorously to prevent a possible tragedy.  QPR is not a form of counseling or treatment.  Rather it is intended to offer hope through positive action.  Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to receive help.

Course Objectives

  1.  Participants will be able to identify individuals who may be struggling with suicidal thinking by using verbal and nonverbal clues and warning signs
  2. Participants will be able to compile and prepare different, but effective ways of asking a direct and clear list of questions to ask an individual if they are suicidal
  3. Participants will be able to assess a variety of resources and referrals that are most appropriate and fitting to the suicidal individual
  4. Participants will be able to identify and analyze different populations of people who present with the greatest risk of suicide based on rates of statistical data
