Co-occurring Disorders

Penn Foundation recognizes that some clients seeking treatment may have two co-occurring primary disorders: a substance use disorder and a psychiatric illness. These disorders, although highly connected, are found to exist independently of one another. Regardless of cause, each disorder has its own course, with psychiatric symptoms found to persist even after a period of abstinence. Through therapeutic activities conducted by mental health professionals, we help our clients to recognize the connection between substance abuse and mental health and the need to address both areas for recovery to occur.
